Confederacy: Last Week Tonight with John Oliver (HBO)

Confederate symbols are still celebrated despite the ugly history they symbolize. John Oliver suggests some representations of southern pride that involve less racism and more Stephen Colbert.

I recently discovered that my home town hosted a Klan rally in the mid SEVENTIES that led to alot of people signing up. Like low 3 figures. Somewhere between 150 and 300 recruits. In the mid SEVENTIES. These people are still alive. And raised kids here. I would never want to stir up feelings that are put to rest. But the idea that these things are already put to rest? That's Star Trek. Idk what scifi type future people think we're living in that we can just look back and reflect on...all..that...? We're still in it. It's ok to admit it. Racism isn't going away because pop culture figured out how to make a buck while pretending it's a thing of the past. This is real. Like addiction level real. The type of thing that will sweep your humanity from underneath your feet if you don't handle it.

I'm not trying to undercut John's point about military bases named after confederate officers. But. A significant portion of this country from states to counties, to ships, to bases etc...are named after First Nation people. I don't have a point I'm trying to make. I haven't put much thought into it. Feels vaguely relevant tho.

I completely agree with what Oliver is saying. However, I would say there also needs to be a real conversation about the connection between slavery, racism, and the history of the United States as a WHOLE. It is hypocritical that people say Confederate symbols/monuments represent slavery and oppression, yet hardly anyone says that about things like the American Flag (which, by the way, was the primary symbol used at KKK rallies before the Civil Rights movement) when slavery was an AMERICAN institution that benefited the entire nation's economy, not just a southern one. Northern states might not have allowed owning slaves, but they definitely profited off of slavery just as much as the south did. There is a reason why the majority of Northerners were never abolitionists and the majority of men fighting for the Union weren't doing it to free slaves but to preserve the United States as a country. What it comes down to is that there was little moral high ground on either side of the Civil War, and people who act like it was otherwise don't know their history. The whole thing was just a FUBAR mess, and if we are going to be intellectually honest and not hypocritical we should take down ALL of the monuments, Confederate and Union, and stop venerating flags, whether Confederate or American.

I don't think sound bites, or even an hour long show does proper justice to this time period, nor does it maintain historical perspective. 1% of the south owned slaves, slaves for the other 99% were still hated, but because of jobs. So the principle reason for the civil war was slavery with most landholders educated and members of government. Northern states were industrializing with high immigration, the were exuding more and more power within the US, and with territories filling up, there was an overriding concern that the south would end up out voted and the North dictating to them the laws of the US. Most southern whites were un-educated, apparently still are, and newspapers were even more partisan that even in 2021, so the only news they received was biased. So in some ignorant, no clue what's really going on way, many confederate troops were defending their "country", their state. You can even look at how people viewed the USA, was it like the EU or was it an inseparable and forever union.

In case you didn't watch the video, or forgot, most of those statues were constructed during Jim Crow and the civil rights movement, not soon after the civil war. War memorials are one thing, but statues made for the purpose of intimidation and as a reminder of segregation... America treats its own citizens with contempt. During WW2, black American soldiers posted abroad with allied troops were not even permitted to sit next to their white American comrades. They sat with the British, Canadian and Australian soldiers, where they were treated as equals, to the extent that American commanding officers tried to stop the allied soldiers from being friendly to the Black soldiers. The British COs refused to stop accommodating the black soldiers. That is what those statues stand for, and it stinks. That's what educated people think of when they see those statues.

It alone defeats the whole idea that the civil war was about keeping slaves. The federal government was going to allow the Southern states to keep slaves on the condition that they didn't secede. They seceded anyway. Four slave owning states fought for the Union. The confederate soldiers dying on the battlefield were not the slave owners. They also did far less raping, pillaging, and murdering civilians than the Union did. Lincoln did not like black people and was planning to ship freed slaves off to Liberia before he was killed. A father of a family worked in a factory with his wife and 2 grown children. This couple also had two daughters, an 8-year-old and a 15-year-old young daughter, very beautiful. Between the marriage and the two older children, although they did not live comfortably, they could cover their expenses every month ... One day the owner of the factory upon learning of the existence of that beautiful daughter proposed to the parents that if they offered their young daughter as a wife, they would all lack nothing, to which the couple refused. The angry factory owner fired both the couple and their two older children from his factory. Weeks later, after unsuccessfully looking for work, this family discovered that the millionaire owner of the factory had bribed, threatened or intimidated anyone who provided work or help to this family... Although some dared to help with food and a little money, little by little many gave in to the intimidation of the depraved businessman, and this family began to lack food and resources to live. A family secretly offered him 3 loaves at dusk so that they could eat something, which the father had to ration in equal parts so that everyone could eat something that even if it did not fill them, would keep them alive. As time went by, the need in that home was desperate, and given the inability of this couple and their older children to support their family, this began to affect the relationship within the home... their parents, although they loved their young daughters, they could not keep them healthy, as they couldn’t provide for them any more. Every time they went out looking for work, everyone closed their doors on them, people were too afraid on helping out... Soon as the girls were starving, the factory manager began a whole campaign making the younger daughters believe that their parents were not capable of supporting or providing any more for the family. He said; “These parents are unable to provide even the basics for their child to live humanely”... Over time with the offers and promises of a good life, this depraved businessman sweetened the ears and eyes of these two young girls who went to live far away from their parents, in the businessman's house... For this factory owner, it was very easy to stifle all the possibilities that this old couple, together with their two oldest children had to support their own family, and then use the result of their macabre work, to blame them for their inability to guide and provide for their minor daughters to have a dignified life... The daughters who did not have the maturity and understanding necessary to realize the manipulation of which they were victims of, ended up changing the love of their family and their place of origin for the offer of a better life at the hands of this depraved businessman... Why do news channels muted their voices about this truth, and american people keep silent, when so many countries are asking for justice... news.un.org/en/story/2021/06/1094612

@I Shedski they had an opportunity to lift him up, as literally thousands of police officers have said he should have, at minute 3,4,5,6,7,8 or 9. Not sure why you’re giving police the ability to murder people for committing low level crimes. Why does the right want to give so much power to the government, while simultaneously railing against government. It’s almost like White people have found an institution in the government that actively protects their interests.

@C Quiznos He was on the ground because he was put there after resisting. HE was in the car, then got out of the car and tried to escape custody. Then he was subdued...then the drugs, combined with his heart condition took over - that's when the evil, mean, racist cops (there was a Black office present too - did you know that?) called for an ambulance - to take him to the hospital to be cared for... his death was NOT intentional, and was therefore NOT murder. Those are facts, and if you can't handle them, that's YOUR problem. If Floyd had not ingested massive amounts of fentanyl and had not been in the act of committing counterfeiting and had not resisted arrest, he'd still be alive. This is true for practically EVERY case in which the Left tries to make a political issue out of these types of incidents... But when BLM kills a Black security officer during one of their riots, nobody on the left says a damn thing. Bunch of lying, race-mongering hypocrites.

In no way is this statement and indoresment of the Confederacy. It is obvious the truth does matter for Jonh Oliver (but he did ride the short bus to school and pee his pants until he wa 17) The civil war was fought over foreign trade. The north was the manufacturing center of the country while the south was agriculture and some commodites. At the time England was able to produce manufactured goods for less than the northern states and were willing to buy foodstuffs and commodity for more. So when the federal government made this illegal it sparked the Civil War. The idea that Americans in the northern states were less racist than the south is total bullshit. If you could slaves in manufacturing the War would have been fought the slaves never would have been freed. So this sh!head John Oliver has his agenda but does not explain why the emancipation proclamation was signed until 3 years after the war started. So if you don't want to read a history book you can believe this idiot whose agenda is more important than the truth. I vote the for the same party as Oliver it just don't drink the revisionist Kool Aid.

@RonPaulHatesBlacks I'd vote for a black conservative, over a white liberal any day of the week, does that still make me a white supremacist? but you should really educate yourself.. Republicans became competitive in the south as early as 1928. In 1952 Dwight Eisenhower (R), won a majority of the the southern states after supporting Brown v Board of Education which desegregated southern schools. So was he a racist? Southern Democrats were the ones angry with the Civil Rights Act of 1964 evidenced by the fact that TWENTY-ONE of their senators opposed it, and only one of those twenty-one became a Republican. Richard Nixon actually lost the deep south in 1968, while Jimmy Carter swept the south. Also, Bill Clinton won a majority of the southern states in his presidential election as a Democrat. So does that make Democrats the racist that year? I'm having a hard time with your theory now. Republicans didn't hold a majority of southern congressional seats until 1994, 30 years after the Civil Rights act. So if all of the racists ditched the Democrats bc of the civil rights act, then why did it take them 3 decades to do so? Not really buying your party flip theory. Democrats have just gas lighted the whole history of the political landscape, and attempted to shroud their racist sins in the cloud of some magical party switch, and, of course, idiots like you lap it up like a dog. Congrats!

Having been in high school and taken history classes in the south, I was sent to the principals office over this subject. She said in front of my AT LEAST half black class, “My family’s struggle has nothing to do with yours. We were fighting the North for freedom.” I read allowed the VP’s speech, and she cried, called me a “Yankee bastard” and sent me off. Later found out her dad was a klansman.
